Seljalandsfoss – Island

"Arrival" | Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Iceland | A remarkable moment, filled with blossoming elements all over this icelandic landscape, from the midnight warm clouds to the endless stream of water and resilient vegetation. . This image was made right after I arrived to the Seljalandsfoss parking space, during the June 2016 trip. The clouds were warming up before midnight, and I got the usual impulse of going straight to the waterfall base and shoot from there. All of a sudden this purplish red cloud starts coming right from behind the waterfall and I instinctively decided I had to capture it, trying a new visual approach for this iconic spot. Using a vibrant plant in the foreground, the river stream as guiding line and mirroring the cloud in the water, this is the final result. Salar de Uyuni – Bolivien

A nice example of geometrical designs in nature! The one thing that stands out about the never ending white dessert that the salar de Uyuni is, are the hexagonal salt shapes that look like they have been laid down by council workers. When looking up why exactly hexagons are formed here, we read that hexagons are in fact a very efficient shape that is often found in nature (for example honeycomb, dry surfaces, the giants causeway, …) . Without going into detail, it has something to do with expansion/contraction cracking. As the salt dries, and probably also influenced by heating and cooling, the surface contracts. That means cracks have to form to allow the contraction to occur. Apparently, the most stable arrangement of these is in a hexagonal system. Thank you google!
